The Tygerberg Doctoral Office powers PhD studies in the
Matie Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
- from proposal development to graduation day and success.
Our campus is situated in the picturesque Tygerberg area of Cape Town, South Africa. The FMHS counts
among the top 150 medical and health sciences schools in the world, and the top four ?in Africa. The Tygerberg Doctoral Office fulfils the secretariate function of the FMHS Committee for Postgraduate Research; facilitates the SU Pre-Doctoral Short Course in Medicine and Health Sciences; administers the examination of full research (100%) masters theses as a key route into the PhD; and supplies comprehensive support to all stakeholders in PhD studies. Our PhD Support pages contain detailed information on the different steps of the doctoral journey. A brief overview of these resources is available for download in
brochure format. The detailed regulations that apply to doctoral students are captured in the SU Yearbook (Part 1 - General) as well as the FMHS

Comprehensive, wraparound support is available for all aspects of doctoral studies in the FMHS, ?from first enquiry, through formal selection and proposal review to intention to submit. Ms Brigitta Kepkey welcomes all enquiries about doctoral studies in this faculty at

The SU Pre-Doctoral Short Course in Medicine and Health Sciences is convened annually in two, in-person block weeks. Selection is competitive and numbers are capp?ed. The course is next planned for ?11 to 22 May 2026. Enquire to Dr Chanelle Windvogel at
