Through its affiliation with Tygerberg, Stikland and Lentegeur hospitals, the Department provides comprehensive mental health services while training the next generation of psychiatrists, researchers, and mental health professionals.

The Department's research portfolio spans a wide range of critical areas, including consultation-liaison psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, psychopharmacology, child and adolescent psychiatry, community mental health, and global mental health. With a strong emphasis on addressing the unique mental health challenges facing African populations, the Department has cultivated numerous international collaborations and contributed significantly to global psychiatric literature.
