??????Department of Psychiatry
Research
The Department of Psychiatry has focused significantly on mental health research that is relevant to the South African context, with particular emphasis on trauma, anxiety disorders, neuroHIV and substance use disorders. We have conducted extensive research into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its prevalence in South African communities, while also investigating the genetic and environmental factors that influence mental health conditions in the local population. The Department has been notably involved in HIV-psychiatry research, examining the intersection of mental health with HIV/AIDS in South African communities.
The Department also maintains a strong focus on neuropsychiatric disorders and neuroscience research, utilizing neuroimaging and other advanced technologies to better understand brain function and mental illness. We have also established several collaborative research programmes with other international institutions. Our research initiatives particularly emphasize developing culturally appropriate mental health interventions that are suitable for the South African healthcare system and its diverse population.?
