Department of Nursing and Midwifery

??Responsive lear?ning ?- outreach and public services 

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery focuses on fostering sustainable engagement with various partners in our broader community by creating relevant, mutually beneficial partnerships through community interaction. This allows for the learners to respond to community needs through needs analysis implementation and evaluation of sustainable projects that improve health care and streamline the health systems. Responsive learning happens through partnerships in Western Cape Department of health, Private Hospitals, non -governmental organizations, community development and research that enhances the community service needs while bridging the gap between care provision and the burden of disease.

Responsive learning activities staff and students are involved with in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery includes the following:

  • Sexual Reproductive Maternal and Child Health activities in collaboration with Sharing Abundant Life Together (SALT) in Dunoon and Joslovo communities. SALT is involved in supporting children in these communities in schools by providing food parcels. Further, nutrition for women and children by giving food parcels monthly. The Department of Nursing and Midwifery supports the NGO through promotive preventive activities for the vulnerable women when they visit SALT for the food parcels.
    • Corporate involvement: accommodate a grade 12 learner in an internship to allow them to gain valuable experience. Finishing strong is part of an educational initiative which enables the grade 12 learners to complete the year with academic support by volunteers.
    • Breast and cervical cancer screening activities in collaboration with Pink drive were conducted to teach women breast examination while providing screening for them. 200 women were screened with 16 refered for further management for breast cancer. Five,  of these women had some form of malignancy.
  • Sustainable projects within the health care centers and hospitals; include:
    • Grieving and counselling rooms in Tygerberg hospital and Groote Schuur hospitals. These grieving rooms are used for women who have dying babies and want to spend the last moments together.
  • ?Capacity building for leadership and management in Primary health care, which is offered as a short learning programme in the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga?
