Paediatric Infectious Diseases

The children's HIV clinic at Tygerberg Hospital was established in 1997 as part of the adult clinic in an attempt to give comprehensive care to families affected by HIV.

We have a highly trained consultant core with combined expertise in paediatric HIV, childhood TB and paediatric infection control.

The children's HIV service, supported by team from Department of Medicine functioning as the Family Clinic, manages HIV infected children with antiretroviral drugs. We manage a 15 bed infectious diseases ward of in-hospital referrals as well as complicated infectious disease problems on a secondary and tertiary level.

We have established clinics for children infected with HIV with outreach and support to paediatric HIV clinics in our health district and referral area. Currently we are supporting 4 hospital based and 4 community based clinics in our drainage area.

We are part of the CID (Centre of Infectious Diseases at Tygerberg Hospital) together with the Department of Medicine, Medical Microbiology, Virology, the Unit for Infection Control, Community Medicine and Ukwanda.

The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Journal club was established with colleagues from the 肆客足球 of Cape Town and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in an effort to improve links and training opportunities across the tertiary platform in the Western Cape. The group meets monthly, alternating between the 2 centres

The Unit is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a training unit for the Certificate in Paediatric Infectious Diseases.
