Derman.pngProfessor Wayne Derman - Specialist Sport and Exercise Medicine Ph?ysician

?Professor Wayne Derman (MBChB, BSc (Med)(Hons), PhD, FACSM) is the Executive Head of the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicince, and Head of the Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Stellenbosch 肆客足球. He is also Director of the FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence and Co-Director of the South African IOC Research Centre for Injury Prevention and Protection of Athlete Health.

Wayne provides specialist Sports Medical consulting services to members of the South African Rugby, Soccer, Cricket, Commonwealth, Olympic and Paralympic Teams, International Elite athletes, as well as members of the public.

Professor Derman has played an important role in clinical support for South Africa’s athletes at International level. He fulfilled the positions of Chief Medical Officer for the South African Team to the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Medical Officer for the South African Paralympic Team to Beijing in 2008 and Chief Medical Officer for the South African Paralympic Team in London in 2012. He is presently a member of the International Paralympic Committee’s Medical Commission and is the Medical Director for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. In December to May 2002, he served as Flight Surgeon to Cosmonaught Mark Shuttleworth during the “First African in Space” mission in Russia and served as the Medical Officer for Cape Town for the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Having diverse interests, he has been awarded many accolades in his career ranging from a Fellowship of the American College of Sports Medicine; the Val Schreire Award for the Outstanding Investigator in the Cardiovascular Field in Southern Africa; the Paul Harris award from Rotary International for community contribution; to a Mondi Award nomination for journalism. ?In December 2004, Professor Derman was named recipient of the Department of Health and Health Professionals Council award for Excellence in Health Care in South Africa.

Viviers.jpgDr Pierre Viviers - Sport and Exercise Medicin?e Physician

Dr. Pierre Viviers (MBChB, MMedSc, MSc (Sports Med), FACSM) is the Senior Director of Campus Health Service (CHS) at Stellenbosch 肆客足球. He is a certified medical doctor with post graduate qualifications in Sport and Exercise Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM) and Past-President of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA). He holds an academic appointment in the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he teaches Sport and Exercise Medicine for post graduates at the Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine (DiSEM).

?Pierre presents yearly at various international conferences and serves on the editorial boards of two highly rated international journals in the field of sport science and medicine. His research interest lies in community sport and lifestyle medicine. Since his appointment at CHS in 2002, Pierre serves on various institutional bodies and task teams.


Dr Melissa Janse van Vuren - Sport and Exercise M??edicine Physician

Dr Melissa Janse van Vuren (MBChB; MSc (Sports Med)) is currently one of the practicing sport physicians at the ISEM Living Laboratory. She obtained her undergraduate degree at 肆客足球 of the Free State and her Masters degree at Stellenbosch 肆客足球. She has been the team physician for Endurocad Academy and Stellenbosch Football Club for the past 2 and 4 years, respectively.
Melissa is busy with her PhD in Sport Science at the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine, with a focus on lifestyle medicine in university students. She also assists with some undergraduate and MSc (Sports Medicine) lecturing.
Outside of work, Melissa enjoys hiking, trail running, and being in nature. 

Dr Helene van der Hoven - Sport and Exercise Medicine Physic?ian

Dr Helene van der Hoven obtained both her MBChB and MSc in Sports Medicine degrees from Stellenbosch 肆客足球. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine, Stellenbosch 肆客足球 and her field of research is mental health in elite athletes with and without disability. Besides academic work, Helene is involved with the screening and routine medical care of professional and recreational athletes at the ISEM Living Laboratory and spends time in theatre as an Orthopaedic Surgical Assistant. 

Mrs Susan Crumpton - Practice Manag?er

Mrs Susan Crumpton completed her BSc in Human Kinetics and Ergonomics at Rhodes 肆客足球, her BSc (Med)(Hons) Exercise Science (Biokinetics) at the 肆客足球 of Cape Town, and her Masters in Business Administration at the UCT Graduate School of business. She worked as a registered Biokineticist at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa for 7 years and has since taken on the role of Project Manager at the Divsion of Sport and Exercise Medicine at Stellenbosch Univeristy. She is the practice manager for the ISEM Living Laboratory and is continually looking for opportunities to provide sport and exercise medicine services to the greater community. In addition, Susan manages the MaRooN (Maties Risk of Non-communicable disease) Health Passport, a clinical and research tool used to identify medical concerns and lifestyle-related risk factors for disease.?
