As the recipient of the SU Teaching Fellowship in 2022, Dr Marnel Mouton explored the transformative role of the STEM Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) in widening access, supporting student development, and fostering academic success in the STEM fields. Grounded in her experience as an educator, coordinator and educational researcher, she will highlight key challenges and successes in navigating the complex intersection between readiness challenges and actualizing potential. At the core of this is the importance of a manageable transition into higher education, strong support structures, a sense of belonging, committed academic staff, intentional skills development, and solid foundational knowledge building — all contributing to student agency, improved retention, higher throughput, and more purposeful academic journeys.?
In this seminar, Dr Mouton further explores the institutional conditions necessary for success in higher education through lessons learnt from the ECP. Through evidence-based insights, she aims to share how intentional, student-centred engagement may drive both academic achievement and personal growth, thus student success.
