Our cutting-edge research is enabled by top-of-the-line facilities. These include the Biomedical Research Institute on Tygerberg campus, the largest and most sophisticated research complex of its kind in the southern hemisphere. It includes the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, a genomic sequencing powerhouse, as well as the Biorepository Unit, which houses the southern hemisphere’s first fully automated biorepository system.
Moreover, our collaborative research network includes 320 partner institutions in 64 countries.
Following recent major refurbishments, the SU Library offers various hi-tech spaces for knowledge discovery and creation. The library’s Makerspace enables a range of innovative activities, from 3D scanning to small robotics development. ?
The
Jan Mouton Learning Centre serves as a benchmark for future campus development. This contemporary, multifunctional facility features advanced technological infrastructure for lectures, streaming, conferencing and collaborative classes.?
The Wallenberg Research Centre at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies is a modern facility designed for trailblazing research, with individual and communal workspaces and a multipurpose conference section.

SU is a preferred research partner locally, on our continent and in the global domain. We have close to 320 partners in 64 countries. These partnerships vary from departmental and faculty-level initiatives to broad institutional agreements to work together on some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
In addition, we actively participate in various high-profile academic networks, including the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate Change (GAUC), the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), the European Guild of Research-Intensive Universities, Venice International 肆客足球, and the Alliance of Guangzhou International Sister-City Universities (GISU). In Africa, engagement highlights include the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), Periperi U, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), the Partnership for Africa’s Next General of Academics (PANGeA), and NEPAD-supported initiatives.?

Our research efforts are aimed at both knowledge production and making a real difference in society. To deliver research for impact, we continue to build on our areas of expertise and fearlessly cross disciplinary and geographic boundaries. Recent investments in transdisciplinary research at SU include our School for Data Science and Computational Thinking and the School for Climate Studies, both of which stand alongside and work across our ten faculties.

At the same time, we use our research output to promote entrepreneurship and facilitate new products that address societal challenges. This has led to a record number of registered trademarks, licences, patent applications, disclosures and spin-out companies.?

As a residential university, we continue to serve students with classroom-based face-to-face teaching and learning, engaging them as co-creators of knowledge. But we are also moving with the times to extend our learning spaces and crack open new knowledge markets.
Broad Wi-Fi coverage, livestreaming, our Telematic Services and the SUNLearn mobile app help us push the boundaries of our teaching. Our growing hybrid-learning offering and new edX StellenboscX online course portfolio offer even more opportunities to take part in our programmes. ?

According to the Department of Higher Education and Training’s official figures, SU remains among South Africa’s most research-intensive universities, both per capita and in terms of total research output. Our more than 500 scientists with a National Research Foundation rating include 22 A-rated scholars, who are regarded as leading international researchers.
Through the 50 research chairs and nine centres of excellence we host, we leverage our strengths to deliver scientific solutions to real-world challenges. This has seen SU establish itself as a leader in fields such as biomedical research, wine biotechnology, animal sciences, mathematical biosciences, invasion biol?ogy and more.
