The Division of Radiodiagnosis has 10 full-time consultant radiologists, 2 part-time consultant radiologists, 17 registrars, and 11 supernumerary registrars.

Together with the Divisions of Nuclear Medicine, Medical Physics, Radiation Oncology, and Radiobiology, we form part of the Department of Medical Imaging and Clinical Oncology.

RSNA Global Learning Center

Stellenbosch 肆客足球 in South Africa was recently announced as the first Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) Global Learning Center (GLC). ?

The RSNA GLC aims to connect a radiology institution based in a low- or middle-income country with a team of RSNA members for an educational program to improve departmental skills and competency.

Over a three-year period, a team of RSNA members, headed by an RSNA Program Director, will work with Stellenbosch 肆客足球 to develop a customized educational plan including a curriculum with hands-on training, didactic lectures (virtual and in-person), conferences, online courses, and other educational offerings. State of the art clinical services

Tygerberg Hospital is the largest academic hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest in the country, having an inpatient bed capacity of 1384.  We are an extremely busy radiology department, currently performing in excess of 180,000 examinations a year.

Our well equipped, fully digital radiology department delivers state of the art clinical services in all radiological modalities, including ultrasound, conventional radiography, fluoroscopy, interventional radiology, mammography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Training

Undergraduate training

Our consultant radiologists are actively involved in the undergraduate medical training program, teaching students the fundamental radiological principles.

Postgraduate training

We are committed to diversity and transformation. Any South African medical graduate wishing to pursue a career in diagnostic radiology is eligible to apply for registrar posts as advertised.  It is recommended that the Part l examination, as convened by the College of Radiologists of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, be completed prior to the commencement of registrar training.

The 5-year registrar training program includes an initial 29-month structured rotation through all major imaging modalities. Assessments are conducted at the conclusion of training in each modality. The course includes a structured weekly teaching program, which systematically covers the postgraduate curriculum in a 4-year cycle.

International training

We welcome educational and research partnerships with other African countries through the appointment of supernumerary registrars and encourage short-term observerships by radiology trainees and undergraduate students worldwide.

Short courses

In 2012, our Division introduced a Radiology Refresher Course for medical officers, general practitioners, registrars, and radiographers. This was extremely well received and is since held annually in September.

Collaboration

Our Division holds regular radiological meetings with clinical colleagues in general surgery, paediatric surgery, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, breast surgery, urology, otorhinolaryngology, adult and paediatric pulmonology, nuclear medicine, neonatology, rheumatology, and endocrinology.

Research

Within our Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, we are involved in research projects with the Divisions of Clinical and Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Anatomy, Cardiology and Psychiatry. We welcome proposals for further innovative research partnerships.

Currently, two of our full-time consultants are pursuing research doctoral degrees (PhD).

Association

We are represented on the Council of the College of Radiologists of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and are actively involved in the Executive Committee, the Examining Board, and the Education Portfolio.
