This Department was established in 1920 and has a long tradition of research in macroeconomics, structural economic issues, and economic policy formulation, implementation and assessment in the context of a developing country.
Exchange agreements exist with, among others, the Vrije 肆客足球, and the Universities of Erasmus Rotterdam, Lund, Bath and of Maastricht. An exciting component of our offering is a joint master's programme in Development Economics in partnership with G?ttingen 肆客足球 in Germany.?
The Department hosts thriving research centres which actively contribute to scholarship and public debate. ReSEP (Research on Socio-Economic Policy) is a nationally influential unit that focuses on issues of poverty, income distribution, social mobility, economic development and social policy. LEAP (the Laboratory for the Economics of Africa’s Past) with its Chair in Economics, History and Policy is an internationally renowned centre for the study of African economic history and its interaction with policy. The CHF (Centre for Household Finance) looks into pressing issues around personal financial sustainability, while the CCLE (Centre for Competition Law and Economics) reaches across disciplines to find solutions to market imperfections.

The Department offers two full-time, taught honours programmes:
??The Honours in Economics ?offers candidates specialised training in economic theory and economic data analysis, preparing them for careers in the financial, public and civil society sectors.
?Our Honours in Economics and Mathematical Statistics programme covers a specialised study not only of economics, but also of statistical inference. This programme equips students to analyse quantitative economic relationships and prepares students to apply the tools of data science to economic questions.
Building on from an honours degree, or its equivalent, students may choose between ?a research-based master's programme, requiring a thesis that is the result of independent research, or a taught master's programme. The latter is a full-time programme that aims to produce competent professional economists who can continue as researchers or be employed in the public and private sector. Students can opt for General Economics, or specialise in Financial Economics, Behavioural Economics, Applied Econometrics, or Development Economics.
A select number of students will be allowed to register for the jointly taught master's programme in Development Economics that is offered in partnership with G?ttingen 肆客足球, Germany.
The highest qualification offered by the Department is a Doctorate in Economics by way of a dissertation.
