ICMG24 Conference Recap: A Successful Gathering of Military Geoscientists

We are delighted to share that the ICMG24 conference was a resounding success! The event, held from June 9 to June 14, 2024, at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, South Africa, brought together military geoscientists from around the world in an innovative hybrid format. This allowed for both in-person and virtual participation, fostering a truly global exchange of ideas and collaboration.

Highlights of the ICMG24 Conference

• Hybrid Format: For the first time, ICMG24 was conducted as an international hybrid conference, enabling participants from various parts of the world to join either in person or online. This approach significantly broadened the reach and inclusivity of the event.
• Diverse Participation: We were honored to host esteemed national and international institutions and military organisations. This diverse representation enriched the discussions and provided valuable insights into the field of military geosciences.
• Keynote Addresses and Sessions: The conference featured a series of compelling keynote addresses, technical sessions, and panel discussions on a wide range of topics. The theme, "Unmasking the Change and Continuity in the Nature and Character of Military Operations," resonated throughout the event.
• Abstract Presentations: We received numerous high-quality abstract submissions. Presenters shared their research through both oral presentations and poster sessions, contributing to the dynamic exchange of knowledge.
• Post-Conference Excursion: Participants enjoyed a five-day post-conference field excursion exploring the coastal geology and military history of the greater Cape Town area, Franschhoek, the Cederberg region, Saldanha Bay, and Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve.
