Professor Clive Gray has a profound involvement in HIV-1 research spanning several decades since 1995, and he has contributed significantly to the field. His work in immunology, particularly in the context of HIV infection and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), has offered valuable insights into CD8+ T cell dynamics and immune restoration. As a leader in establishing a renowned immunology laboratory in South Africa, Professor Gray has explored the immune pathogenesis of HIV, emphasizing the role of memory T cells in survival and differentiation. Notably, his recent research concentrates on HIV-exposed, uninfected newborn infants, investigating placental immunology and its implications for infant health. The Reproductive Immunology Research Consortium in Africa, which he initiated in 2021, aims to address health challenges in this vulnerable infant population by prioritizing the organ placenta.
Berenice plays a pivotal role in our organization, focusing on the effective management of a diverse array of research projects within our group. She serves as the central point of coordination and supervision, bridging the gap between administration, clinical activities, and laboratory operations. With a remarkable 15-year journey in the biomedical sciences field, she has acquired invaluable experience and has left her mark on numerous scientific publications. Originally hailing from the Republic of Benin, Berenice's academic and professional journey has taken her through various regions across the African continent, including Ivory Coast, Benin, Tunisia, Ghana, and South Africa. Her extensive exposure to diverse African environments has enriched her perspective and contributed to her wealth of experience. Berenice's vision harmonizes seamlessly with the mission of the RIRCA, which is to actively participate in nurturing the next generation of scientists in Africa, with a special focus on the realm of Reproductive Immunology.
Portia holds a Master's degree in Molecular Biology under the guidance of Prof Chegou at SU-IRG. Portia's expertise lies in evaluating novel Mtb antigen-specific host biomarkers as bio-signatures for the diagnosis of TB disease. Currently, as a Laboratory Technologist within the RIRCA group, Portia meticulously processes and stores biological specimens in adherence to GCP and GCLP guidelines. In her role, Portia conducts downstream assays for placental tissues, employing techniques such as immunofluorescence microscopy to gain deeper insights. Portia's professional journey is driven by a keen interest in understanding placental and fetal immunology, particularly in the context of women living with HIV infection.
