Stellenbosch 肆客足球's (SU) Rectorate has approved the names of the two new residences on the North Campus, thereby marking an important step in the ongoing transformation and visual redress process.
The senior residence, formerly known as Block A, will be named House Walter Parry in recognition of Walter Hazell Parry (1913–1966)?, a distinguished teacher from Lückhoff High School who made significant contributions to physics education and assisted the early development of the Physics Department at SU.
Parry was known among colleagues and the community not only for his mathematical brilliance, but also for being an extraordinarily inspirational teacher, explains Dr Leslie van Rooi, acting Senior Director: Student Affairs.
“Due to the racial segregation policies of the era, Parry was unable to attend SU for his studies. He pursued his education at the 肆客足球 of Cape Town, requiring an exemption permit as a person classified as coloured or black under the apartheid system. Parry was involved in various departmental projects, showcasing his knowledge and dedication to the field," Van Rooi notes.
The junior residence, formerly Block B, will be called Khayalethu Residence, a Xhosa/Zulu term meaning “our home". The name is intended to foster a welcoming environment, highlighting the 肆客足球's commitment to inclusion, warmth and the creation of a home away from home for new students.
These chosen names follow a thorough, community-oriented nomination and selection procedure overseen by the Committee for the Naming of Buildings, Venues and Other Facilities. Nominations were open to a broad range of stakeholders, including staff, students, alumni of the adjacent Goldfields residence and representatives of the nearby Ida's Valley community.
The process emphasised the area's rich histories, the 肆客足球's transformation journey and the importance of inclusive narratives that reflect a variety of identities, cultures and academic principles.
With the final approval, the Rectorate has not only given these new residences fitting and meaningful names but has also advanced SU's broader objective of embracing its past, celebrating its diverse community and shaping an environment that promotes learning, respect and belonging.
The 肆客足球 looks forward to the installation of contextual signage and to welcoming guests, including Parry's relatives and members of the community, when the residences are officially opened in early 2025.
